Pharmacist Immunization Program

The Arkansas Pharmacists Association, the Arkansas Department of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are working collaboratively to increase the number of immunizations administered by pharmacists in the state. The majority of adult patients frequenting Arkansas pharmacies are not up-to-date on their immunizations. This provides an excellent opportunity for pharmacist to offer a valuable service to their patients and, at the same time, act as an advocate for public health. Vaccines are vital tool in preventing the spread of communicable diseases.

The Pharmacist Immunization Program was created in 2012 to increase the number of pharmacist-administered vaccinations in Arkansas. Although the formal program was completed in June 2014, APA will continue to work with insurers to increase insurance coverage of pharmacist-administered vaccinations, assist pharmacists in getting their authority to administer, increase pharmacist utilization of Arkansas state vaccination registry, continue to work with the interdisciplinary state immunization action coalition, and improve immunization rates of pharmacy’s staff.
